In 1980, the U.S. House of Representatives designated this day each year to honor and recognize the accomplishments of the nation's infusion nurse specialists, as well as the Infusion Nurses Society (INS).

Plastic surgery industry hits $15B a year in China as women seek Western looks
(NewsCore) - Plastic surgery in China is now a $15 billion a year industry, as women unhappy with their Asian appearance increasingly go under the knife to get a Western look.
Until the 1980s, cosmetic surgery was banned by China's Communist government, but it exploded as the nation's wealth increased.
The most popular procedure in China is something known as "double eyelids," according to surgeons. The operation begins with a thin layer of fat being sliced from above the eye and is completed with a crease being stitched into the socket -- which makes eyes appear less Asian and more European.
Other common procedures include nose enlargements, jawbone reshaping and liposuction on the cheeks.
"Foreigners think that the Chinese all have flat faces and small eyes because that's what our race looks like," said plastic surgeon Dr. Shi Sanba, the founder of a high-end Beijing clinic. "But now that China's getting richer, people are no longer satisfied with their appearance. We think Westerners are more beautiful."
Shi, who had more than 60 operations herself, said she liked to experiment with new techniques on her own face before recommending them. Her clients include the wives of government officials and a host of celebrities.
But China was recently stunned by the news that well-known singer Wang Bei died on the operating table during an operation to have her jaw reshaped. Wang's mother, who was also undergoing cosmetic surgery in the same hospital, woke up to hear that her daughter choked to death on her own blood.
China's blossoming market economy is short on regulation and lax on enforcement, which led to thousands of other women falling victim to surgical errors. Beware Goo.gl Fake Antivirus Worm on Twitter - PCWorld Business Center
Twitter and Twitter users are being targeted by a malicious worm. The worm sends out tweets with a goo.gl shortened URL link directed to a rogue antivirus application. The attack demonstrates once again how URL shortening can be a Pandora's box as users click on links with no clue where they might lead.

"Thousands of Twitter users are finding that their accounts have been tweeting out malicious links without their permission, pointing to a fake anti-virus attack," adding, "A quick search on the popular micro-blogging network finds many tweets from users containing no message other than a goo.gl shortened link (Google's equivalent to bit.ly or tinyurl), which itself points to a URL ending with "m28sx.html".
Attacks hiding behind shortened URLs are not new, and are also not technically challenging to execute. By their very nature, URL shortening services like goo.gl and bit.ly take cumbersome, long URLs and condense them down to a nice, short alias that can be used in its place. The concept makes it much easier to send some exceptionally long links, and is a necessity for a site like Twitter which caps messages at 140 characters.
Adam Wosotowsky, principal researcher at McAfee Labs, explains, "Shortened URL sites are not 100 percent malicious, so blocking the domain completely can cause false positives, which is something researchers try and avoid. Goo.gl is an example of a site associated with Google, so blocking the domain may be frowned upon by Google, allowing the spammer to continually abuse the site."

It’s been quite a while since we first saw the cheapest tablet in India. The tablet was supposed to come at a price of Rs. 1600 and the launch was due on the 15th of January. Well, the date has passed but there's news now that the tender to make these tablets, which was previously given to HCL has been cancelled.

According to sources, the tender for the tablet was handed to HCL, but a mail doing the rounds inside the Ministry of HRD said that the selected vendor was making demands that were unreasonable. The Rs. 60 Crore tender is up for grabs again, so it’s time to wait and see who will actually take the dive.While it looks like HCL has not confirmed about the news, there is no mention of it on government websites either. Also, it seems to be that the tablet was under a lot of speculation about it being completely outsourced from China.
We’ve had our share of delayed promises really, right from Mobile Number Portability to 3G Connectivity and now we have the tablet thingy. Maybe the government is not to be blamed completely, the fact that two parties should know about the whole deal before signing a contract is not rocket science.
Anyhow, the only option left is to wait (again!) and watch.

Larry Page's PageRank algorithm was the basis for Google Inc.'s search engine. As Google's new chief executive, Mr. Page will face the challenge of leading a company that has grown far beyond that algorithm and must compete with agile Web upstarts such as Facebook Inc. and Groupon Inc.

On Friday, a day after being named to replace outgoing CEO Eric Schmidt in April, Mr. Page gave little hint of how he planned to tackle such challenges. The 38-year-old Google co-founder didn't immediately address employees in an all-hands note or meeting, said a person familiar with the matter, though the company has a weekly Friday meeting that Mr. Page was expected to attend.
But several of Mr. Page's former colleagues describe him as having similarities to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, whom Mr. Page has said he admired. Both men are strong willed, sometimes impolite and push engineers hard to execute their ambitious projects.
Some former colleagues said Mr. Page is likely to try to pierce through the sometimes "paralyzing" bureaucracy that product managers and engineers have faced when trying to launch some Google products in recent years.
On Thursday, Messrs. Page and Schmidt said some top-level decision-making had gotten slower and the management change would improve that. Also, the company has said it is trying to allow more projects to operate like start-ups inside of Google in order to speed up innovation.
"Larry's style is going to be different [than Mr. Schmidt's], but he has amazing instincts around developing products and is a tireless champion for improving users' experience," said David Scacco, who joined Google as its first advertising sales executive in 2000 and is now chief revenue officer at MyLikes, a social-media ad company.
The record of technology company founders who later take on the CEO role is mixed. Mr. Jobs revived then-foundering Apple when he became its CEO in 1997 and has since propelled it to become the world's most valuable technology concern.
Others who have tried to pull off the same feat have stumbled. Yahoo Inc. co-founder Jerry Yang led the company between 2007 and 2009, but handed the reins over to current CEO Carol Bartz. Michael Dell, who returned to turn around Dell Inc. in 2007, is still in the process of revitalizing the personal computer company.
Mr. Page is taking over as Google is working to further diversify its revenue streams beyond Internet search advertising and is facing increased competition from companies like Facebook.
Google so far has failed to gain major traction with social-networking-type services such as Google Buzz, but is continuing to develop new initiatives in that area, people familiar with the matter have said.
Page's Projects
In addition to creating Google's search engine, Larry Page also had a hand in other efforts:
- Oversaw creation of products like Gmail, Chrome browser and operating system
- Championed buying YouTube Orkut social-networking service
- Solar panels on company headquarters
- W-Fi for city of Mountain View, Calif.
- Driver-less car technology
When asked about competition from social-networking sites like Facebook during Google's fourth-quarter earnings conference call on Thursday, Mr. Page said, "We are only at the very, very early stages of that, and I'm incredibly excited about the possibilities."
He didn't discuss his strategy for running the company on Thursday's conference call, and a Google spokeswoman declined to make Mr. Page available Friday.
Mr. Page, who was born and raised in Michigan and later attended Stanford University, where he met Google co-founder Sergey Brin, was Google's CEO early on after the start-up was founded in 1998.
He has helped make key decisions at the company since giving up the CEO reins to Mr. Schmidt in 2001.
Mr. Page helped oversee the creation of Google's popular email service Gmail and the Chrome Web browser. He also championed acquisitions such as that of YouTube, the video site, in 2006.
Mr. Page has also played roles in projects that didn't take off, including the Orkut social-networking service.
Mr. Page's passions extend beyond the Internet. His emphasis on clean energy helped lead to Google installing solar panels on the roof of its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, and he helped put together a team at Google that is developing technology to help cars drive themselves.
Former Google employees and executives who worked with Mr. Page or attended executive management meetings said he sometimes appeared uninterested in the sessions and allowed Mr. Schmidt to take charge. He also showed little care for matters like budgets and policy, functions that Mr. Schmidt gravitated toward, they said.
Mr. Page's desire to move quickly on ambitious ideas was stifled by company bureaucracy, according to people who worked with him. He often told mid-level engineers to instantly roll out changes to the search engine, but the process would often take several weeks as those engineers worked with their immediate supervisors, said a person familiar with the matter.
Another pet project in recent years was a service called "G Drive" that would allow consumers to store music files and other data online. But "it wasn't prioritized as he would have liked," said a person familiar with the matter.
The product was never launched.

A Government initiative to share knowledge and improve quality and performance in the health sector is striking the right note with health experts just months after it was launched.
Figures show 12,448 people made 23,127 visits to the website of the Health Improvement and Innovation Resource Centre (HIIRC) between 1 July and 31 December 2010. The website can be found at www.hiirc.org.nz.
“Those numbers are really encouraging for such a new site,” says HIIRC spokesperson Gary Tonkin, a senior project manager in the Ministry of Health’s Sector Capability and Implementation Directorate.
“HIIRC is the sector’s main source of latest health research, exemplars of best practice, and trusted health information. We’re committed to ensuring the site is dynamic and relevant for everyone working in health, including clinicians, providers, researchers and policy makers – and we are confident we’ll see those website usage figures continue to climb this year.”
HIIRC was established by the Ministry of Health to improve the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders by sharing examples of innovation and quality improvement, and by making New Zealand research more available to people working in health.
It provides an extensive Knowledge Library of research literature, directories of individuals and organisations, access to improvement tools, and the latest news about events and projects. Topics include hospital productivity, shorter stays in emergency departments, primary health, access to elective services, diabetes and cardiovascular services.
“It’s an excellent resource for the sector,” says Gary Tonkin.
“Whatever your health specialty, you’ll find something useful on the site, whether it’s a case study, discussion topic or research review. You can subscribe to daily site updates too, so you’re always in the loop.
“HIIRC is all about sharing knowledge and insights so that over time the sector’s performance improves.”
